Time To Get Your Braces? How To Prepare For Those First Few Days

The day has finally arrived. It's time for you to begin orthodontic treatment. Once you're done, your teeth will be straight, and you'll have the smile you've always wanted. Now that you're about to begin your orthodontic treatment, you may be wondering how your braces will feel, and if you'll experience any discomfort. It's important to note that there will be some minor discomfort during that first week. Plus, there may be discomfort whenever your braces are adjusted. However, using the simple tips provided here will help you alleviate the discomfort.

Do a Quick Check after Your Appointment

When it comes to caring for your braces and avoiding the discomfort, it's important that you take a few minutes before you leave the office. Those few minutes can help you get a head start on the week to come.

First, use your tongue or your finger to feel all the wire. You'll want to check for wire ends that are sticking out far enough to poke the inside of your mouth. If you feel any sharp wires, show your dentist so they can fix those for you.

Second, make sure you have all the supplies you'll need, including orthodontic wax, extra bands, and your cleaning supplies. If you haven't gotten your interproximal brush for cleaning between the spaces, ask your dentist for one before you leave.

Stick to Soft Foods for a Few Days

Whether it's your first day with braces or the orthodontist has adjusted your braces, you'll need to stick to soft foods for a few days. Your teeth are going to be sensitive, which means chewing hard or crunchy foods may be painful.

Stick to foods like soup, yogurt, and pasta for a few days, and then add solid foods a few at a time. If it continues to be painful to eat solid foods, talk to your orthodontist.

Have Plenty of Orthodontic Wax on Hand

While you're getting used to your braces, you'll want to use plenty of orthodontic wax. The metal brackets and wires will cause some serious irritation inside your mouth, and the wax will help alleviate some of that.

Keep a supply of orthodontic wax on hand, and apply it to your braces whenever you feel the slightest irritation against the soft tissue in your mouth.

Go Heavy on the Salt Water Rinses

During that first week after you have your new braces or an adjustment, you may notice an increase in mouth sores. Part of the cause of those sores is from irritation.

You can help heal the sores and alleviate the pain by rinsing with salt water several times a day. For maximum benefit, rinse with salt water when you wake up in the morning, before you go to bed at night, and after each meal.
